Trip overview

Nam Ou Adventure is an 8-day trekking and nature tour through northern Laos. Travel along the Nam Ou River, visit remote villages, walk through forests and rice fields, and stay in local homestays along the way.

The journey starts at Tay Trang and continues to Muang Khua, Ban Sopchem, Ban Kiaukan and Ban Huaysene before reaching the peaceful riverside villages of Muang Ngoi and Nong Khiaw.

You will enjoy boat trips on the Nam Ou River, local village experiences, forest trekking, mountain views and waterfall walks. Highlights include Tham Kaang Cave, Tad Mork Waterfall, Nong Khiaw Viewpoint and the 100 Waterfalls.

The tour ends in Luang Prabang, giving you a chance to experience the natural beauty and local way of life of northern Laos.

Daily Details

DAY 1 — TAY TRANG – MUANG KHUA – BAN SOPCHEM

After completing the Tay Trang border formalities, meet your Lao guide and driver and continue to Muang Khua. Take some time to visit the historic bamboo bridge connecting Muang Khua with Ban Natoun, a H’Mong village.

Then board a traditional long-tail boat and cruise downstream along the Nam Ou River to Ban Sopchem. Enjoy views of the mountains, local villages, fishermen and daily life along the river. You will also pass the Nam Ou Hydroelectric Dam.

Arrive in Ban Sopchem in the afternoon and check in at the local homestay. Enjoy views of the Nam Ou River and surrounding mountains. Later, join a traditional Baci ceremony to welcome guests into the village.

Dinner is served at a riverside restaurant. Overnight in Ban Sopchem.

DAY 2 — BAN SOPCHEM – BAN HATSAPHUAY – BAN KIAUKAN

After breakfast, take a traditional boat along the Nam Ou River to Ban Hatsaphuay, a Khmu village.

From the village, start a 5–6 hour trek through the forest towards Ban Kiaukan. Enjoy the natural scenery and mountain views along the way. A local picnic lunch will be served during the trek.

Arrive in Ban Kiaukan in the late afternoon. Enjoy dinner with the local villagers and stay overnight in a simple bamboo homestay, experiencing the local way of life.

DAY 3 — BAN KIAUKAN – BAN HUAYSENE

After breakfast, continue the trek for around 4 hours through bamboo forests and mountain landscapes. The route includes downhill sections with beautiful views of the surrounding hills.

Stop for lunch along the way before continuing to Ban Huaysene. Arrive at the village and enjoy dinner with the local community.

Stay overnight in a simple bamboo guesthouse or local home in Ban Huaysene.

DAY 4 — BAN HUAYSENE – MUANG NGOI

Start the morning by learning about local life and the daily activities of the villagers.

Then trek for around 3 hours through rice fields and countryside towards Muang Ngoi. Along the way, visit Tham Kaang Cave, where you can take a break and, depending on conditions, enjoy a swim.

Arrive in Muang Ngoi around noon and have lunch at a local restaurant. The afternoon is free to explore and enjoy this peaceful riverside village.

DAY 5 — MUANG NGOI – TAD MORK – NONG KHIAW

After breakfast, take a boat downstream along the Nam Ou River to Tad Mork. From the river, trek for about 1 hour to the waterfall near Ban Sop Kong, a Khmu village.

Enjoy time at Tad Mork and have a picnic lunch by the waterfall.

In the afternoon, continue by boat to Ban Sopvan, a Tai Lue village located beside the Nam Ou River. Visit the village and see the local farms and daily life.

Continue by boat for about 30 minutes to Nong Khiaw. Arrive in the afternoon and check in at your hotel.

DAY 6 — NONG KHIAW VIEWPOINT

Today, trek to one of the main viewpoints in Nong Khiaw. The trail is short but steep, with an elevation gain of around 400 metres over approximately 1.8 km.

The trek takes about 4 hours, including around 1.5 hours to reach the viewpoint, time for a break, and 1.5 hours to return. From the top, enjoy wide views of Nong Khiaw and the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The afternoon is free to relax at the hotel, enjoy the pool or explore Nong Khiaw at your own pace.

Overnight in Nong Khiaw.

DAY 7 — NONG KHIAW – TAD 100 – PAK NGA – LUANG PRABANG

Start the day with a boat trip along the Nam Ou River and learn about local life along the river.

Continue to the 100 Falls, where you will walk through small streams, rice fields and jungle. Follow the waterfall trail with your guide and enjoy the natural scenery. A local-style lunch will be prepared near the falls.

After the trek, return to the village and continue by boat for around 1.5 hours to Ban Pak Nga. From there, transfer by vehicle to Luang Prabang.
